what does echo mean?

Echo is more than just our name, it's an acronym that stands for Endurance, Character, Hope, and Order.

These four words help shape how we disciple families. We want to help people endure difficult seasons, build Christ-like character, hold on to hope for a better future, and bring healthy, God-centered order into their homes and everyday lives.

Our goal is not just for families to survive, but to thrive, and to become a source of hope and encouragement to the people around them.

A bit of history.

Echo Church began in 1953, when Lakewood and Long Beach were still growing into the communities we know today. New homes were being built, families were moving in, and neighborhoods were taking shape.

Right in the middle of it all, God called Rev. Mary V. Rood to start a church. Local newspapers described her as “Lakewood’s only woman pastor,” and she was truly ahead of her time. She began by gathering people in homes and garages, then rented a space in Long Beach, and eventually purchased a two-story ranch house on the property where our church still stands today.

That small group became Lakewood Foursquare Church. Over the years, the church became known for gospel concerts, revival meetings, Vacation Bible Schools, and prayer gatherings that brought people together. As the congregation grew, the sanctuary grew too.

Through the decades, many faithful pastors and families helped carry the church forward. The buildings changed, the neighborhood changed, and even the church’s name changed—from Lakewood Foursquare Church to El Dorado Foursquare Church, Long Beach East Foursquare Church, The Lighthouse, The Branch, and now Echo Church.

Different names. Different seasons. Same mission.

Today, Echo Church continues the work that began in 1953: sharing the love of Jesus with families and helping the message of the Gospel reach every heart and home.

We are grateful for everyone who came before us, and we believe the story is still being written.

Service Time

Our Sunday worship service begins at 10:30 AM and usually lasts about two hours from start to finish.

Come as You Are

There is no dress code. You will see everything from jeans and T-shirts to dresses and button-down shirts.

Worship & Teaching

Enjoy contemporary worship with a full band, followed by practical, Bible-based teaching that connects faith with everyday life.

Echo Kids

Echo Kids serves children from birth through elementary school with fun, age-appropriate lessons in a safe and secure environment.

Our spacious parking lot has plenty of room, and friendly greeters are available to help you find your way.

Enrique and Perla Leon are the Lead Pastors of Echo Church in Long Beach, California. Together they are passionate about helping people encounter Jesus, strengthen their families, and discover God’s purpose for their lives.

Before coming to Echo Church, they served as assistant ministers at Worshipwalk Church in Burbank. When Foursquare invited them to serve in Long Beach, they stepped into the role of co-lead pastors and now work side by side in teaching, discipleship, leadership, and every area of church life.

Their heart is to help families experience real breakthrough through Jesus and to see Echo Church become a trusted presence and resource in the community.

Pastor Enrique is a teacher, theologian, marketing executive, and digital designer with a relaxed personality and a good sense of humor. He loves the Dodgers and the Kansas City Chiefs. Pastor Perla is a counselor, homeschool mom, parent educator, and passionate, Spirit-filled preacher who loves encouraging and inspiring others. Coffee is also a big part of their ministry.

Together, they are committed to helping people grow in faith and discover the life-changing power of Jesus.
